Sport as a Symbol

"Symbol: Something that represents something else by association...especially an object used to represent something invisible."

Sport is the ultimate provider of symbols in our culture. Transcending political, geographical, and cultural limitations, sport has the ability to unite populations completely unassociated through any other means. Sport has replaced the bloody Coliseum of Rome with a new, shining arenas in which one city's best battle another city's best for pride, glory and psychological bragging rights over the other.

The symbolism of sport is so similar to the many battles fought upon the plains of ancient Europe that a victory in modern sport can make a city or state act as if they have won an actual war.

While sport can amazingly bring a city together through triumph, it's greatest role is played during tragedy. The recent horrific events that took place in the city of Boston, during the Boston Marathon and the also the following week, reflect the significance of the Boston sport's teams as a symbol of the City's resolve.

The national anthem at the Bruins vs. Sabres game on Tuesday:

Although the actual sport itself, whether it be hockey, basketball or baseball, has no literal impact or relation to the bombings that took place, sport (yet again) acts as a symbol for support. To support the Bruins is to support Boston. To cheer along with the Celtics is to cheer for a city in mourning. And to unite with the Red Sox is to show that our biggest differences lie in what color uniform we prefer. While the entire city of Boston was brought to a stand-still, the most noteworthy events on the schedule were when Boston's teams would be competing again. These games give an opportunity to reflect on what took place, honor the heroes who were so quick to help, and show pride through the powerful symbol of sport. Perhaps it is the innocence of competition, or the marvel at great physical performance, but sport will always play a powerful role during great tragedies. Thoughts, prayers, and support to all of those affected by these events, and best of luck to the Teams of Boston through the remainder of the season, as they represent a city to be proud of.
